2012: Any hope for Ghana Boxing?
There is a saying that old ladies become uncomfortable when the issue of bones is discussed and certainly the likes of Professor Azumah Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey and David Kotey Poison, just to mention a few will be wriggling with discomfort in their seats when pundits talk about world titles in connection with Ghanaian boxers.
Ghanaian boxers in their quest to hold on to at least a world title experienced a declivity, when two world title hopefuls, former IBF Welterweight and former IBF and WBC Bantamweight champions, Joshua Clottey and Joseph Kingkong Agbeko lost a grip of their titles in the space of two years.
The former IBF Welterweight champion, Joshua Clottey in his bid to reclaim a world title after losing to Miguel Cotto in June 2009, lost in a 12 round unanimous decision to the current pound-for-pound champion, Manny Pacquiao in the WBO Welterweight world title fight on the 13th of March,2010 at the Cowboy Stadium,Arlinton,Texas. Many boxing lovers dubbed the fight as “fixed” and others described it as a “mediocrity” considering the fact that Joshua Clottey never threw enough punches, not to talk of landing them. After eighteen months on inactivity, Joshua Clottey gave Ghanaians a consolation by defeating American Calvin Green in around two(2)of eight(8) in a non-title fight at the Reliant Arena,Houston,Texas on the 9th of Novmber,2011.
The moment of redemption came when former IBF Bantamweight world champion, Joseph Kingkong Agbeko, after losing his IBF and WBC Silver Bantamweight world title in the first meeting over a controversial 12 round Majority Decision to the Mexican Abner Mares, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, L as Vegas, Nevada on the 13th of August,2011, was presented with the second chance to confute the initial verdict and reclaim the IBF and the WBC titles, this time at the Honda Centre,Anaheim,Carlifonia on the 3rd of December,2011.
Joseph Kingkong Agbeko garnered 110 to 118 points on all three judges’ score cards to usher Ghana boxing into 2012 bereft of a world title holder.Ghana, thus enters a new year without a known world title holder in the one-time sport where the hearts of many countries will palpitate with fear at the mention of illustrious Ghanaian boxers like, Barima Azumah”Professor”Nelson, Ike”Bazooka”Quartey, David”Poison”Kotey and Akwei”Razor”Addo.
Question are now spreading apace as to whether there will be a “rebirth” of new champions or whether the “old guards” could still prove their worth on the international scene?
The answer still lies in the womb of time in 2012.
