THE REPERCUSSIONS OF GRASSROOT FOOTBALL'S NEGLECT

In less than one year,Ghana has had three of its national teams kicked out of major tournaments. The U-23 national team, The Black Meteors, were kicked out by Sudan in the 2012 Olympic games qualifiers.Africa and World Youth  champions, the Black Satellites(U-20), barely secured two points in the group stages of the U-20 Youth Tournament in South Africa and shame facedly bowed out.

The womens national team succumbed to unknown Ethiopia and our U-17 have not qualified for the Youth tournament for some tome now.The Black Stars seem the only national side making progress.Does it not justify the fact that, the GFA is A Black Stars GFA?

Years back, Ghanaians were of the view that, the youth team perfomed better than the senior national team.Yes!it manifested in the senior national team.We had a solid national team in those days but due to the "assumed" dichotomy of ABEDI PELE and ANTHONY"TONY" YEBOAH, the cohesion and understanding was not there to qualify us to a single world cup.

There is no doubt that Ghana has produced great footballers ,notably,MUHAMMED POLO,IBRAHIM SUNDAY,ABEDI PELE,"TONY' YEBOAH,ODARTEY LAMPTEY,STEPHEN APPIAH,MICHAEL ESSIEN and the list could be endless.Interestingly, all these players came through the grassroot level right up to the youth teams, into the senior national team, the Black Stars.

Our grassroot football is on the brink of collapse.Following are the exact words of FORMER FOOTBALLER,MUHAMMED POLO, when I interviewed him,"The technical direction is not there to help groom our young footballers",The authorities are suppressing our grassroot football".Muhammed, how are they "suppressing our grassroot football?.He reiterated that, the coaches capable of grooming the young players at the grassroot level are not given the chance to do so and therefore the players are left like a flock of sheep without a shepherd.

I tend to side with Polo, because you would have a sorry percentage should you conduct a survey on the number of juvenile team coaches that have had quality coaching course.

"For lack of knowledge my people perish";Seek knowledge even if as far as China"says the Bible and the Quran.Juvenile team owners and coaches do football out of interest not caring a fig for the knowledge, skill and the expertise needed to manage and instil quality football knowledge into the youth. What is the GFA doing about it?

This has resulted in half-baked players pumped into various departments of our football.Colts football, where ideally our U-17 should come from is a debacle.Third Division league is virtually missing.

Divisions One and Two and the Premier league where our U-20,U-23,THE CHAN TEAM(the local Black Stars)and the senior national team should draw its players from, have declined in quality of play leading to the recently dismal performance of the CHAN team in Sudan.

If we don't rebuild our grassroot football in order to produce young footballers to feed our various youth teams and our local clubs, then we should be prepared to have a poor future for the Black Stars that is claiming all the plaudits today.
